What I would do if I woke up with SUPERPOWERS! Costumes

In my circles I’m known as THE comic book guy. When it comes to superheroes people ask me all sorts of questions. “Who would win in a fight between…” “Can that guy do that?” “Who’s the richest superhero?” There are endless questions that are asked and I can spend hours on the topic since I’m obsessed with any character with powers.

Recently I’ve been asked some questions that have really got my creative juices flowing. Friends have taken to asking me what I would do if I woke up with superpowers. Now I could see myself as an antihero, a supervillain, or a hero. But, for now, let’s focus on what to do if you woke up with super powers and wanted to become a superhero.

First things first, a kickass, pun intended, costume. This, like everything we’ll cover, is going to depend on your power set. Look, if you’re reading this I’m going to take a guess that you know there are more powers than I could list in a week of just listing powers. So I’ll just hit some of the most common powers.

Super Strength: Usually this comes with invulnerability, but not always. If you wake with super strength AND invulnerability you aren’t really going to need armor. However, there are levels to both of these powers. So, if you have low levels of these powers, say, bulletproof and only able to lift a ton or two, you may want to find something to help you out in case someone brings out the big guns. If you can survive a nuclear blast, please, please, don’t go out and get armor. No one can hurt you, we don’t have anything, yet, that can do more damage than that. Leave the armored Underoos at home. If you only have super strength you’d better get some body armor. I suggest military surplus, unless you have friends in high places. (I’m talking DARPA.)

Flight: If you can fly you’re going to need something aerodynamic. I’d suggest something lightweight. And make sure you have goggles or something to protect your eyes. Having something to keep the bugs out of your mouth would probably be a good idea as well. I’ve ridden motorcycles and getting a bug in your mouth doing 50 mph can be a pain in the neck.

Super Speed: The same things for flight are going to be needed for speed. You’ll also need some really fancy footwear for this power, but since you’re going to burn through them you’re going to need to stock up to protect your feet.

Fire Manipulation: There are several things to consider with this. First thing to consider is if you are fire proof. If you are then your clothes should be fire resistant or not get in the way of your powers. It’d be really embarrassing to stop the world from ending while completely nude. If you are not fire proof you are going to really need that fire resistant clothing. If you can’t create the flame yourself then you’re going to need something to generate the flame; a zippo, two sticks to rub together, whatever you need.

Energy Manipulation: This one could be tricky. There are many different kinds of energy (I know Fire could fall into this, but since you may need to generate a flame it’s a bit different.) That means the fire resistant clothing may be a good idea. If your power is electricity then you’ll need something to ground yourself. More than likely you’ll be immune to your own power, but just to be safe this would be a good idea. Some type of heat sink might be helpful in keep you cool.

Regeneration: We have plastics that can heal itself, but we’re still a few years away from self-healing clothing. Buy cheap and buy in bulk.

Miscellaneous: As we covered before there are more powers than I can list so basically for most other powers, like telekinesis, telepathy, magic, you can pretty much wear what you want. These powers are mostly the “Hail Marys” anyway, so if you have one of these you aren’t going to have much competition.

And that’s what I’d do for a costume if I woke up with superpowers. This has been me with my first blog post: What I’d do if I woke up with SUPERPOWERS!
